Urumathi farm is located in Komothai ward, Githunguri sub County of Kiambu County. The three parcels of land lie between 1805M and 1890 M above sea level.
The farm is owned and managed by Stephen Kahugu Kinyanjui’s family. The thirty acre farm has approximately 17,000 trees.
Urumathi farm lies in the coffee - tea transition zone close to the Aberdare range. Soils are red volcanic and well-drained; therefore, the climate is ideal for coffee production.
Reliable bimodal rainfall and temperature range of 16-26 c give the coffee a “bright, citrus acidic and full body”.
The average annual production is 1200kg/Ha equivalent to 14 Tons with most of the coffee falling between classes 3 – 4.
Cherry is harvested and processed the same day through wet processing. After pulping the coffee is fermented overnight, washed, soaked and put on drying tables. Coffee parchment is dried to moisture content of 10 to 10.5, and stored awaiting delivery to dry mill.
The area is rich in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem. Farmers are sensitized on the importance of preserving indigenous species. Species in the area include snakes, deer, hare, weaverbirds, owls and hawks among others. Additionally, numerous indigenous plant species like Fig, Cordia, Croton and neem trees are found in this region.
